On Tuesday, July 14, a tragic train collision near Portage la Prairie claimed the life of Brett Matheson-Maytwayashing, a Manitoba Sheriff’s Officer. The devastating crash left his colleague hospitalized.

Brett Matheson-Maytwayashing was an active member of the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union (MGEU/NUPGE) who served as a Chief Steward, a Workplace Safety & Health representative, and attended the union’s convention as a delegate multiple times. 

Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and coworkers of these dedicated members.

These officers were performing vital work, keeping our justice system moving and our communities safe.

It’s important that we find out what happened. We await the findings from the ongoing RCMP and Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health investigations.
