Together for Fairness: NUPGE Supports BCGEU

September 2 2025

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) stands in solidarity with our component, the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU), and the 34,000 public service workers taking strike action across British Columbia today.

BCGEU members keep communities running, supporting public safety, protecting the environment, delivering frontline services, and ensuring people get the help they need when they need it. They have bargained in good faith for a fair contract that keeps wages on pace with the rising cost of living and provides the resources required to deliver quality public services. When negotiations reached impasse, members voted to authorize job action. Their mandate is clear and legitimate.

“The members of BCGEU are standing up not only for themselves, but for the future of public services in British Columbia,” said Bert Blundon, President of NUPGE. “Our union family across Canada will stand shoulder to shoulder with BCGEU members on the picket lines until a fair contract is agreed on.”

NUPGE calls on the B.C. government and the BC Public Service Agency to return to the table with a fair offer that recognizes workers’ expertise and the essential services they provide. Respect at the bargaining table is respect for the public these workers serve every day.

“Picket lines are an expression of collective strength and a commitment to the services British Columbians rely on,” said Blundon. “Our entire national union, our components and our members from coast-to-coast will continue to support BCGEU members in every way necessary until a fair agreement is reached.”
