Spotlight on Healthcare Workers

December 18 2025

Canadians rely on public healthcare to respond in times of crisis, to care for their loved ones and to provide support across life’s most challenging moments. The strength of this care is built on a foundation of specialized expertise and clinical skill from a vast team of professionals. Their integral contributions, though often unrecognized, are the steady force that keeps quality care running.

In January 2025, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) surveyed our over 180,000 healthcare members to learn more about their insight on the care they provide, the challenges they face, and their hopes for healthcare in the future.

“These are the professionals who keep the health care system running – they take your bloodwork, book your appointments, clean your hospital rooms, and do so much more to ensure patients receive quality care,” said NUPGE President Bert Blundon. “Their roles in health care are as diverse as they are critical, and all are routinely understaffed and undercompensated and their contributions go unrecognized.”

The Heartbeat of Care campaign will reveal who these important people are and why their skills and expertise are so important to all of us. Help us to recognize and celebrate those workers who make safe, compassionate, and reliable care possible in every community. Their commitment powers every diagnosis, every recovery, and every act of healing.

Your support is more than a thank you to these healthcare professionals. It will help protect public care for all, and honour every worker, every role, and every heartbeat that keeps our healthcare alive.
