National AccessAbility Week 2026

May 25 2026

National AccessAbility Week is an annual event that begins on the last Sunday in May. This year, National AccessAbility Week runs from May 24 to 30. This year’s theme is “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada” which calls on individuals, organizations, and governments to take action to advance a barrier-free country.

NUPGE is a committed ally to people with disabilities and the disability justice movement. At its 2025 convention, NUPGE published a policy paper called Workers with Disabilities and Disability Justice which includes a section on tangible actions unions can take internally, through collective bargaining, and through lobbying. Earlier this year, NUPGE published an Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA) Focus Analysis of Budget 2025, an expanded segment of the Budget 2025 Analysis. NUPGE also works closely with its Workers with Disabilities Committee, most recently on a submission to the National Housing Council’s Review Panel on the Lack of Accessible Housing in Canada.

NUPGE has also recently entered a partnership with Inclusive Design for Employment Access (IDEA). IDEA has a wealth of free tools and resources available to the public that can be accessed on their website. The resources include microlearnings, tools, podcasts, reports, and infographics that educate and assist employers and policy makers with creating inclusive workplaces.
