New Official Administrator appointed to lead Alberta Health Services

Edmonton (27 Aug. 2015) — Health Minister Sarah Hoffman has named David Carpenter the Official Administrator of Alberta Health Services (AHS), while work continues on a long-term governance plan for the organization.

Carpenter was the mayor of Lethbridge from 1986 to 2001 and has a long history of board governance roles in the public and private sectors. He was the Chair of the Workers’ Compensation Board from 2004 to 2012 and has been a member of the Alberta Capital Finance Authority Board since 2013.

Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health, said of his appointment, “I’m very pleased that David Carpenter has agreed to take on this role while we continue developing a plan for the governance of Alberta Health Services. David is a proven leader and I look forward to working closely with him on ensuring a stable health system that is focused on delivering the services Albertans rely on each and every day.”

The Official Administrator is accountable to the Minister of Health and is responsible under legislation for providing governance oversight of AHS.

Carpenter’s appointment runs until the end of December. He takes the place of Dr. Carl Amrhein, who is now the Deputy Minister of Health.
