Orthopedic Technologists at Markham Stouffville Hospital unanimously choose OPSEU

Toronto (19 July 2018) — Orthopaedic Technologists working at the Markham Stouffville Hospital have voted unanimously in favour of joining of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE). The union will now represent this entire group of health professionals. 

Orthopedic technologists join OPSEU/NUPGE's 25,000 members in the Hospital Professionals Division

Warren (Smokey) Thomas, OPSEU President welcomed the newest members. 

“OPSEU’s Hospital Professionals Division is growing stronger every day,” said Thomas. “OPSEU/NUPGE has represented hospital professionals across Ontario for close to 50 years. We’ve got the experience and knowledge to provide top-notch representation to allied health professionals. I commend the group for making a very wise and timely choice.”

These professionals are being welcomed as OPSEU/NUPGE's newest members of Local 348, which represents more than 300 laboratory technologists, technicians and assistants at the Markham Stouffville Hospital, and more than 1000 health professionals at Lakeridge Health.

OPSEU/NUPGE, the choice for allied health professionals 

“Our newest members have not only found a home in their new local, but in our proud union,” said Sara Labelle, OPSEU Region 3, Regional Vice-President and Chair of OPSEU’s Hospital Professionals Division. “We’re honoured to represent them, and we’ll continue to fight in their best interest every day, at the bargaining table and beyond."

“These are changing times in Ontario,” said Labelle. “It’s more important now than ever to have union representation, and OPSEU/NUPGE is absolutely the union of choice for allied health professionals working in Ontario.”

“Our newest members now have the full strength of our 155,000-member union behind them,” said Thomas. “Together, we are a force to be reckoned with.”
