STRIKE UPDATE: NSGEU/NUPGE members vote to ratify new deal
(November 1, 2010) The striking workers at Cape Breton University who have been on the picket line since October 25, 2010 voted to accept a new collective agreement. The new contract will include a wage increase in all pay rates of 8.67% over the period of August 1, 2009 to April 1, 2012. They also negotiated an additional employed-paid .5% pension premium contribution. The 13 members received incredible support from the general public, academic community and labour organizations in the Sydney area which made it possible to stand firm in their resolve for a fair agreement.
Congrats to members of Local 18 and thanks to everyone for their support during this difficult time.
NSGEU/NUPGE members search for a decent contract
Thirteen members of NSGEU/NUPGE Local 18 who are employed by Cape Breton University are on strike for a fair agreement. These members work as rink attendants, maintenance workers, and certified tradespeople including carpenters, plumbers, electricians, as well as one boiler engineer. Their contract expired in July 2009.
"These workers keep the heat on, the air circulating and the lights burning in all Cape Breton University’s buildings and residencies. They maintain the ice in the rink and make sure the entire campus is safe during and after snowstorms," says NSGEU President Joan Jessome.
"All we are asking for is respect. We are asking for the same increase other Cape Breton University employees were given – 2.9% for four years (2009-2013)."
These workers need your support to reach a fair deal and get back on the job.
